Hybrid Characters

Wolf

Wolf was born unto the alpha and beta of a pack on the eastern coast of what is now called, Adohi. He was born seventh of seven among his siblings with only one other carrying the spirit blood as he did, a sister he simply refers to as, Sister. She called him, Little Brother. They were especially close, because as far as they knew, they were the only hybrids. Despite their differences, the pack treated them no differently from the rest.

As most often happens, tragedy befell young Wolf. When the Laytons settled in their territory, they immediately saw wolves as a threat and began to exterminate them. Wolf’s pack was not spared and along with the rest of his family, his beloved sister was slain at the hands of humans. Wolf barely escaped, though not without injury. He fled, running as far and as fast as his legs would carry him until he could go no further. He collapsed many miles away from the land of his birth, the land he knew, but lonely as he was, he was not alone. He was found and rescued by Bat who still serves as his surrogate mother. Wolf is probably closer to her than he was to his own mother. She raised him and showed him his calling as a speaker and taught him about the human world, but more importantly, taught him of the world of the spirit. Under Bat’s tutelage, he grew both physically and spiritually.

Wolf is fair, reasonable, and patient, though he can be a bit over trusting. At times, he can be sharp tempered, particularly when the safety of his tribe is in jeopardy. Wolf’s power is the gift of tangible sound. He can hear things from afar as easily as those nearby. He can influence sound, bring complete silence to any given area, and use the power of echolocation to find objects and specific locations. Wolf can also discern the words of other creatures. With other hybrids, their speech is limited to understanding their own species, but Wolf hears and communicates with those outside his own, making him a very understanding person in more ways than one.

Cougar

Cougar’s origins are a mystery.  No one, save for him and Bat, knows how he came to be. One day, he simply emerged out of the woods and appeared before Bat and Wolf. Ever since then, he has been a valued member of the family. He is quiet, thoughtful, and wise, as well as a little bit cheeky. He teaches others with patience and allows them to learn through experience. He knows that sometimes, the best way to learn is by doing.

Just as mysterious as Cougar's arrival was, so too are his powers. Cougar has the gift of fluid light. He can bend light to create illusions and projections, as well as to tell the position of things by the sensation of the shadows. He often uses this ability when hunting or deterring unwanted visitors. Like Wolf, Cougar does not shun the human race, he accepts their place in the world as he accepts his own. Cougar has a comfortability with them that makes it easier for them to share his presence. He likes learning about them and even enjoys the wearing of clothes. Where the other hybrids (except Snow Leopard) wear the least amount of garments possible, he takes pleasure in outfitting himself in whatever clothes the natives bestow upon him.

Bear

Bear’s origin is fairly mundane. His mother was a female brown bear and like most bears, she gave birth to twins, both male. But, unlike with Wolf and Sister, Bear's twin did have the spirit blood that he possessed. He grew alongside his sibling, though at a much slower rate. When his brother was learning to hunt, Bear was still learning how to walk. When his brother outgrew the need for his mother, he left and ventured out into the world on his own. Bear stayed with his mother, though he longed for the sight and warmth of the brother that had abandoned him. Sadly, it was just a few years later that Bear’s mother died and he was left alone to the wild all on his own. Soon after that, Bear was found by Bat and was brought to stay with Wolf and Cougar. He was overjoyed to belong to a family, once again, and absolutely thrilled to have not one, but two brothers.

Bear is impetuous, compassionate, and lighthearted. He’s easy going and easy to get along with, but when push comes to shove, he can be just as fierce as any. Bear’s power is the gift of earth influence. Using his ability, he can manipulate the earth in the same manner that a potter wields clay. In fact, it was because of his gift that the den, the place where the hybrids live, was formed.

At some point, Bat left the young cubs to experience the world on their own to learn how to put their teachings to use and learn how to survive on their own, but also to strengthen their bonds with one another. In order to survive, the cubs knew that they would require some sort of shelter. During a rainstorm, Bear became fascinated with the way the rain shaped the soft mud it created. As he watched, he fell into something of a trance. Without thinking, he began to shape the ground, as Wolf and Cougar watched on.  When he snapped out of his trance, there was a gaping hole where he had shaped the ground.  When Wolf and Cougar explained to him what had happened, the idea for the den fell into place.

Lion & Lioness

Lion and Lioness are the only known living hybrids that are the same species, just like Wolf and Sister were.  However, unlike Wolf and Sister, Lion and Lioness are not related by blood.

Lion came from a pride in the north west of what is know known as, Panthros. When he reached puberty, he felt the urge to move on and away from his birth-family. Though he didn't quite understand the feeling that urged him to begin his sojourn, he knew that something was calling out to him. That something was, Lioness.

Lioness was born of a pride in the midwestern plains of what is now known as, Panthros.  She stayed with and learned from her family from her youth into her adolescence. She watched them grow and change, while all the while, she stayed the same. Her brothers and sisters grew quickly, while she barely seemed to grow at all. When she finally approached puberty, Yet, she began having dreams of impending disaster.  She feared for the safety of her pride and felt that somehow, her presence with them would be as a beacon that would deliver an ill fate to them.  To protect her loved ones, she left her pride, hoping to find a resolution to the unseen entity that threatened her kin. On her journey to discover the doom, her wandering led her to a chance encounter with Lion.

The two found each other and ever since that day, they were inseparable. They became close friends, sharing a deep bond like neither of them had felt before. It was a feeling that was greater than friendship and profoundly intimate in an inexplicable way. It was as though they had known each other forever, like they were born of the same flesh. They enjoyed the nearness of the other's company and played off of  each other's strengths and weaknesses. Often, one could tell what the other was thinking just as easily as if they were speaking aloud. They shared each other’s strengths and helped to abate each other’s weaknesses.

After their meeting, Lion and Lioness were uncertain where to travel to next, as the feeling that guided them to each was no longer singing to them. In time, Lioness began to have the recurring nightmares she had when she was with her pride.  She and Lion could sense that something was coming, so they embarked on another journey in search of the disturbance. On their way, they came across another hybrid, an orphaned leopard cub they simply called, Leopard. His mother had died long ago, leaving the boy to fend for himself on his own, but now that he was with Lion and Lioness, he belonged to a family, once again.

The trio continued on their travels, leading them to a new group of hybrids that called themselves, the Sun Tribe. They were led by Tiger, a stern, iron-fisted leader that left the family of three unsettled. Even so, Lion, Lioness, and Leopard join the group and were welcomed by all. However, Tiger held dark beliefs and ambitions. He believed that humans were evil and that they needed to be hunted down and exterminated. At first, Lion and Lioness found logic and agreement in Tiger’s words, as humans were very destructive. But, with the first attack on a human village, they realized that humans bled just like any other creature and that Tiger's views on the validity of their existence were wrong. Because of their “disloyalty”, Tiger secretly sold them to a group of humans that were embarking on a voyage to a new land across the vast sea.

Lion and Lioness found themselves the victims of torture and slavery at the hands of humans. Amidst their abuse, they question their former beliefs and wondered if Tiger had been right in his hatred for mankind. The humans they were sold to took them from their home, to a strange land where the sun did not shine quite so bright or hot. Thankfully, it was the new land was home to the Moon Tribe who found and rescued the two. Lion and Lioness reluctantly joined the Moon Tribe, but with a newfound hatred for humankind and a great sense wariness of other hybrids. Wolf and the others showed them that not all humans were bad and that some could even be very kind, like the people of the Black Creek Tribe. Lion and Lioness’s eyes were once again opened and knew for certain that they were correct believing that Tiger was wrong for hating humans indiscriminately. Through his action, they also learned that just as not all humans were bad, not all hybrids were good.

Lion is strong, loyal, and determined but, he can also be somewhat irrational and quick to anger. Luckily, his temper can be easily soothed, most often with the mere passage of time, or with comforting words from Lioness.

Lioness is loving, honest, and clever with the heart of a huntress. She is quite good at settling a quarrel and bringing peace among adversity. She often has forecasting dreams, dreams that serve as warnings or that gives insight to unsolvable problems.

As they share the same species, Lion and Lioness also share the same gift, the gift of the blazing sun. This power grants them control over fire and the power to generate heat. Being of the sun, Lion and Lioness have the strongest abilities in all the tribe, as the sun’s powers are self-generating. However, with great power comes great consequence, for unlike the other members of the Moon Tribe, Lion and Lioness must “charge” themselves through the light of the sun. If they go for prolonged amounts of time (days) without bathing in the sun’s light, their power and strength become depleted. Only the members of the Sun Tribe have this deficiency. The members of the Moon Tribe do not.

Coyote

Coyote is one of the last members of the Moon tribe to appear. Of all the known hybrids, she is the second most in-touch with her spiritual half after Bat. She was a loner. After outliving her mother she was left in a world to fend for herself. She learned about the world and its inhabitants on her own without the guidance of one wiser than herself. As time went by, she began to have a feeling, much like the inkling that claimed Lion and Lioness. Something called to her so she embarked on a journey which led her to the forest of the Moon Tribe.

Coyote is gentle, shy and quiet. Her favorite pastime is spear fishing. Whenever she is away from the tribe, she is sure to be found at the lake gathering her favorite, fishy food. She barely consumes red meat, though there is no explainable reason for her unique taste. When issues arise, Coyote rarely voices her opinion on matters, opting to instead remain impartial. Only when there is spiritual dilemma and her advice becomes paramount does she offer any input or advice. Coyote wields the gift of spiritual communing. When focusing her spiritual energies, she can perform incredible supernatural feats, including levitating small objects, commanding various elements, and summoning or evicting spirits. Because of the tremendous power she possesses, she is often hesitant to use those powers for fear of losing control over them. Sometimes she has to be encouraged to shed her inhibition and coaxed into believing in herself . In time, though, she gains a bit of confidence and becomes a more participating member of the tribe.

Fox & Raccoon

Like Lion and Lioness, Fox and  Raccoon found each other before they found the Moon Tribe. Even though they were together, they found that even with two pairs of hands, gathering food was difficult. One day, they happened upon a hole before a tree, the den of Wolf, Cougar, and Bear. They decided to see what lived inside and discovered a storeroom.  They feasted on the food they found there and carried some off to store elsewhere. When Wolf, Cougar, and Bear (the only members of the Moon Tribe, at the time) noticed the missing food, they worked to uncover the thief by maintaining vigilant watches, anticipating a return visit from the hungry intruder.

The two mischievous children are eventually found out, but instead of being chastised, they are invited to make the den their new home and the family of 3 grew to a family of 5.

Fox is a natural leader, the other cubs look to him for direction in the absence of the elders. Fox often uses a wisdom that proceeds his age, though still being rather young, he is prone to making mistakes. He often comes across as hard-hearted and set in his ways, though it is just a mask he wears. In actuality, he's very kind and considerate of others. Fox’s elemental power is the gift of wind flow. He can hear thoughts and whispers that are carried on the wind, though he cannot always understand them. He also wields a bit of power over wind currents, guiding its flow, direction, and intensity. He can even lift himself off the ground, but just slightly.

Raccoon is more docile than Fox and is easily led by his friend, but is by no means a pushover. When Fox is in one of his moods, Raccoon is usually the one to bring him out of it. He’s also often the one to cheer up Snow Leopard when she's feeling blue. He wears his heart on his sleeve, though when he is upset, he shuts himself from the rest of the world and internalizes his negative emotions. Raccoon’s power is the gift of tree understanding. He can hear the beating heart of the trees, ease the pains that ail them, and even help them grow. Due to his inexperience and age, his powers are limited. But, as his love for his leafy brethren is abundant, his power is quickly evolving.

Snow Leopard

Snow Leopard (or Snow, as she is often called) had a rough start in life. She was left alone at a very early age, after the death of her mother. She and her mother were being hunted. The desperate snow leopard hid her cub and attempted to flee, but was caught, slain, and skinned right before her daughter's eyes as the tiny girl hid in the bushes nearby. Needless to say, the sight of her mother being slaughtered right in front of her instilled a tremendous amount of fear within her. Once the hunters collected their kill and left, she crept out from the shadows over to where the blood of her mother had stained the snow-covered ground scarlet and lay beside what was left of her. As the sun began to set and the sounds of night began to stir, she took shelter in a nearby tree where she huddled in a tight ball, both to keep warm, but also to console herself from the horrors of the world.

Over time, and with great patience, Wolf earns her trust and she joins the Moon Tribe.

Snow Leopard is bashful, innocent, and open.  She is loved by all, even though she often finds herself the victim of torment by Fox and Raccoon. The others feel a strong need to protect her, as she is the youngest and most vulnerable of the group.  Yet, despite her youth, she exhibits an amazing command over water. Hers is the gift of water crafting. Her powers already exceed Fox’s and Raccoon’s. What's more, she has shown signs that her powers can expand even farther, surpassing the elemental and pushing deeper into the spiritual, much like Coyote’s abilities allow her to do. Eventually, it is suggested that she become a pupil of sorts of Coyote. Under her tutelage, she further grows into her powers, learning to wield them with growing ease and skill.
